La Selva Beach Trestle Completion Ceremony on 2/26 – Join Us!

trestle-skyJoin your community to commemorate completion of the new railroad trestle in La Selva Beach on Thursday, February 26 at 10:30am.

The rail corridor was purchased using $11 million from the voter-approved Proposition 116 bond funding (Clean Air and Transportation Improvement Act) which stipulates that the rail line be used for passenger rail projects within Santa Cruz County. As part of the purchase agreement between the RTC and the previous private property owner, funding was set aside to upgrade a number of structures on the line. The La Selva Beach Trestle is the most extensive of the four bridges upgraded with those funds.

Completion of the La Selva Beach Trestle will re-open the line as an active rail corridor for freight and excursion passenger rail services in the short term. In the longer term, the Regional Transportation Commission and a consultant team is analyzing the feasibility of commuter or transit passenger rail service and the results will be ready for public review this spring. In addition to passenger and freight rail services, the Monterey Bay Sanctuary Scenic Trail Network  Master Plan identifies twenty constructible segments of bicycle and pedestrian path — adjacent to the tracks within the corridor — that will be completed as funding becomes available.  Two segments are funded and moving through design toward construction, one in Santa Cruz and one in Watsonville.

For more information about these and other projects, please see the RTC website: www.sccrtc.org. Also, please sign up for eNews about general or specific transportation projects.

The completion event will feature information about the bridge construction and rail corridor uses. Refreshments will be served.
