Public Input Sought on Transportation Projects Proposed for $7 million

The Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) will hold a public hearing to solicit community input on transportation projects proposed for approximately $7 million in local shares of federal Surface Transportation Block Grant Program (STBG) funding. The hearing is scheduled for Thursday, September 1, 2016 at the County Board of Supervisors Chambers, 701 Ocean Street, Santa Cruz. The hearing will begin no sooner than 9:15 a.m. and will be preceded by a staff presentation.

Projects proposed to receive new funds are located in unincorporated areas of Santa Cruz County and in the cities of Santa Cruz, Scotts Valley, and Watsonville. Projects under consideration include:

  • Local road preservation – pavement repairs
  • Bicycle and sidewalk projects
  • New buses for Santa Cruz METRO
  • Highway 1/9 Intersection Improvements
  • Environmental review of Highway 1 projects
  • Cruz511 and Freeway Service Patrol traveler assistance programs

A full list of projects under consideration and project applications are available online at: www.sccrtc.org/funding-planning/project-funding/. Projects approved for funds by the RTC will be included in the 2016 Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Improvement Program (RTIP).

Public input for the RTC’s consideration of the projects proposed for Surface Transportation Block Grants is welcomed and encouraged. These federal funds are helpful, yet they represent a small amount toward local transportation needs identified in the long range Regional Transportation Plan.  Due to the volatility of gas tax revenues, this is the first time that the RTC has programmed state or federal funds to projects since 2013. Measure D – a countywide November ballot measure – would bring in an additional $500 million through a ½ cent sales tax for priority local transportation projects such as fixing potholes, improving traffic flow on Highway 1 and deterring neighborhood  cut-through traffic, expanding safe routes to school and other bicycle and pedestrian projects, and maintaining transportation services for seniors and people with disabilities.
