La Fonda Bridge Opening Event

About 500 people of all ages, many on bicycles or with dogs, turned out to celebrate the opening of the La Fonda Bridge on Saturday. The new bridge features 6 foot wide sidewalks and bike lanes in both directions, and was constructed as part of the Highway 1 Soquel/Morrissey Auxiliary Lane Project. Attendees were treated to a double-ribbon-cutting (one on each end of the bridge) by Commissioners Neal Coonerty and John Leopold. In addition, the popular Capitola String Ensemble ukulele band played two songs specially written for the La Fonda Bridge opening; one to the tune of London Bridge and the other to La Bamba. Participants enjoyed cake shaped like the La Fonda bridge, snow cones, free bicycle registration, making art by pedaling a bike-powered spin art machine, and stamping out custom transportation buttons.
