Bicycle Route Signage Program

In an effort to increase bicycle ridership and safety in Santa Cruz County, the RTC installed bicycle wayfinding signage at 303 locations throughout the county. The signs assist all types of bicycle riders – commuters, families, recreational riders and visitors – in accessing 53 major destinations throughout the county. Installations were completed in 2020.

Previously, there were few and inconsistent bicycle wayfinding signs in Santa Cruz County, so the RTC worked with community partners to identify and sign preferred routes that have connectivity to bicycle lanes or paths. The preferred routes include fully signed Regional and Local Routes as well as partially signed shorter Neighborhood Routes. The 2015 Implementation Plan includes more details on design standards and establishes the preferred bicycle routes.

A web map shows the preferred routes, locations of the wayfinding signs, and a 2024 update of all countywide bikeways.

The project was funded primarily by an Active Transportation Program grant, as well as by the Transportation Development Act and the Regional Surface Transportation Program Exchange.
